Design*Sponge & Veer’s Design Your Own Alphabet Contest
My wife and I are constantly brainstorming new home improvement projects and keeping our eyes open for furniture deals and vintage finds. And the first place we often look for inspiration is design*sponge. The sneak peak posts are full of brilliance and although the content is pretty slanted toward the feminine eye, I have no shame in the amount of time I have spent looking for inspiration on that site. And recently I came across a post to Design Your Own Alphabet Contest. Grace from design*sponge teamed up with Veer to put on the competition and it seems to have gathered quite a bit of interest. I am also a typography junkie so I couldn’t pass up the challenge.
Skunkling Typeface
Lately I have been obsessed with a couple fonts: Cyclone from Hoefler & Frere-Jones and Hellenic Wide from Jason Walcott of Veer. I love how the two fonts work in juxtaposition to each other but I wondered what they would look like mashed together in a more hand-drawn style. As I was designing each letter in black and white I kept seeing a skunk tail in the white inline stripe of each letter. So when I was thinking of what to name the font I looked up what a baby skunk is called. Turns out it is called a “Kit” but I really wanted to use a lowercase “g” so first I broke my rules of not mixing upper and lower case letters this way and then I made up a fictional word “Skunkling” to title the font. I think it fits!
Black and White

Various Colors

I wish I could offer the font for download, but as of right now it is just an Illustrator file. I haven’t converted it to a functioning font. Maybe someday!

Pure adoration of this font. Fingers crossed it wins!
I love this so much, I hope it becomes available to use (actually, I’d buy the illustrator file!)
